Phonics

Children in our SRP start by following the Little Wandle Phonics Programme at a level and pace appropriate for their development. They also practise hearing the phonemes in word and reading and writing words using sound cards and magnetic letters. Cued Articulation provides an action that prompts the place of articulation for each phoneme. Children also practise reading high frequency and tricky words as ‘whole word sight words’. For children who have followed the Little Wandle programme but for whom difficulties still persist, we use Precision Teaching combined with an adapted Hickey style approach alongside Cued Articulation. Hickey is a multisensory programme endorsed by the British Dyslexia association, which uses a combination of visual and phonological awareness activities to help children retain sounds.
